WHAT LIES AHEAD FOR DEMOCRACY IN 2024?

2024 will be the biggest election year in history, with an estimated 60 countries holding national-level elections and dozens more holding subnational elections. Together, these countries total more than half of the world’s population.

These elections will determine the global democratic trajectory amid rising autocracy and democratic backsliding. IFES President and CEO Tony Banbury says in Politico that “authoritarians are deploying a sophisticated playbook to gain and hold on to power,” but “democratic forces are fighting back.”

Banbury also told TIME Magazine, “without proactive work to defend democracy, there is going to be backsliding.”

One of the major threats to free and fair elections is false information on social media. IFES Cybersecurity and Diplomacy Advisor Dr. Tarun Chaudhary discussed these emerging and rapidly changing threats on a Morning Joe segment about elections in 2024.

NEW REPORT: VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN ELECTIONS IN PAPUA NEW GUINEA

Violence during elections in Papua New Guinea is a serious issue, causing women and members of other marginalized groups to be disenfranchised. To mitigate and prevent violence against women in the future, IFES conducted its second Violence Against Women in Elections (VAWE) Papua New Guinea assessment in 2022 following general elections.

This report comes after IFES conducted its first assessment in 2018, following the 2017 general elections. While there’s a significant amount of work to be done, this report found improvements in providing separate polling lines and polling booths at the majority of polling locations.
